Birmingham Water Works filter plants once again demonstrated their excellence by going four-for-four in the annual awards presented by the Alabama Water and Pollution Control Association.

Shades Mountain Filter Plant was named Best Operated Plant in the Surface Water Greater than 60.0 MGD category, while Western Filter Plant triumphed in the Surface Water 50.1-60 MGD section. The Carson and Putnam plants each won an Award of Excellence in the Surface Water 20.1-30.0 MGD category.

The teams received their awards during a banquet held at the organization’s Annual Short Course and Conference held Aug. 17 at the Perdido Beach Resort in Florida.

In addition, Brittany Reynolds, Operator IV Western Filter Plant, received the Marvin Neal Scholarship Award during the banquet. AWPCA awards several scholarships each year to deserving students pursuing careers in the water and wastewater industries.  She just finished her associate degree from Lawson State Community College and will continue her education at the University of West Alabama this fall in pursuit of a business administration degree.
