During a ceremony held virtually on Jan. 25, the Partnership for Safe Water awarded H.Y. Carson Filter Plant the Phase III 15-Year Directors Award for Water Treatment.
The organization also bestowed the Five Year Presidents Award for Water Treatment upon the Putnam and Carson plants.
“We're extremely proud of our operators and our water plants for achieving this. This is a very challenging level to achieve and they've done an exceptional job,” said Jeffrey Thompson, Assistant General Manager, Operations and Technical Services during a presentation at the Jan. 26 board meeting.
One Birmingham Water Works employee had a role in judging the awards as well. April Nabors, Ph.D., Superintendent of Land Administration and Environmental Engineer, serves as Chair of the Program Effectiveness Assessment Committee (PEAC) Distribution for American Water Works Association (AWWA), one of six organizations making up the Partnership for Safe Water. The committee is responsible for evaluating distribution systems for the awards. Nabors also presented the First Year Directors Award Distribution System Optimization Program winners for 2021 during the virtual ceremony.
"She's a strong leader here and a great asset for us," said Derrick Murphy, Assistant General Manager, Engineering and Maintenance.
More than 300 utilities participate in the Partnership for Safe Water, a voluntary self-assessment and optimization program for water treatment plant and distribution system operation. Each filter plant at Birmingham Water Works has received numerous awards from the Partnership for Safe Water since the program’s inception in 1995.
In addition to the Partnership for Safe Water, the Birmingham Water Works has received numerous awards from industry organizations, including the American Water Works Association, Association of Metropolitan Water Agencies, and Alabama Water and Pollution Control Association, as well as government entities, such as the Centers for Disease Control, and the Alabama Department of Environmental Management.
