For the second year in a row, Birmingham Water Works has earned a coveted honor for the quality of its budget preparation.
The Government Finance Officers Association (GFOA) presented the Distinguished Budget Presentation Award to the Finance Department for the fiscal year beginning on Jan. 1, 2021.
Established in 1984, the award program encourages and assists government entities in preparing comprehensive and understandable budget documents, which helps to improve transparency and increase the public’s trust in government. To earn recognition, budget documents must meet program criteria and excel as a policy document, financial plan, operations guide, and communication tool.
“This award is the highest form of recognition in governmental budgeting. Its attainment represents a significant achievement by your organization,” said Michele Mark Levine, Director of Technical Services Center for GFOA in a letter to Birmingham Water Works.
In addition to a Certificate of Recognition for Budget Preparation, Birmingham Water Works will receive a brass medallion for continued participation in the program. Last year, as a first-time recipient, the organization received an award plaque.
More than 1600 governments, including states, cities, counties, special districts, school districts, and other organizations, have received the award. The awards are presented on a quarterly basis as the GFOA team reviews submissions.
