With its latest haul of awards, Birmingham Water Works continues to demonstrate excellence in water quality and service delivery.

Scott Gormley, Operator III at Western Filter Plant, was recently named Operator of the Year for 2022 by the American Water Works Association (AWWA) Alabama Section.

“Scott’s work here is top notch. He is deserving of this award and the accolades he has received in addition to the ones that he will earn in the future,” said Jonathan Harris, Water Treatment Manager. “Scott’s ‘team first’ attitude and work ethic, along with his dedication and passion for his job, has always made him a joy to work with.”

The Operator of the Year award is given to individuals who exemplify leadership by maintaining plant equipment and efficiency to extend  its usefulness, uphold public health and water standards, and go beyond expectations when training others. Birmingham Water Works operators have brought home the award nine times since its inception in 2013.

AWWA Alabama Section also recognized Carson Filter Plant as Plant of the Year for 2022. The team is led by Superintendent Wendell Cox and Senior Operator Julius Whitehead.

“This staff at Carson has done a great job in making Carson not one of, but ‘the best’ plant in the state of Alabama. They work to produce quality water while maintaining the aesthetics of the plant in terrific shape. Wendell along with Julius and the entire staff are committed to doing their jobs to the best of their abilities and have reaped the benefits with this outstanding honor,” said Harris.

The honorees will receive their awards during the Alabama-Mississippi Water Joint Annual Conference in Mobile April 10-13.
